John is a drummer, percussionist, and composer based in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a
DMA in performance, an MM in performance, and an MA in composition from SUNY Stony
Brook, as well as a BM in performance from Arizona State University. He has studied drums
with Dan Weiss and Ari Hoenig, percussion with Eduardo Leandro, and composition with Daria
Semegen and Margaret Schedel.
John has been teaching music actively in group classes and private lessons since 2013. Upon
matriculating at SUNY Stony Brook, he was awarded a graduate teaching assistantship, and
began lecturing on ethnomusicology at the collegiate level, in addition to teaching music theory
to grades 6-12 in Stony Brook’s Young Artist Program. He has taught drumming to
kindergarteners and elementary school students as an instructor in Brooklyn Steppers Marching
Arts.
John works actively in the NYC jazz and indie rock scenes, and has performed with artists
including Dabin Ryu, Arta Jekabsone, and Corey Wallace. He also works as a drummer and
percussionist in musical theatre, and has played two northeast tours with the Mettawee River
Theatre Company. Also an active studio artist, John contributed drum parts to David Voss’s
2020 record Pictures at an Inhibition, and has recorded vibraphone parts for Gabriel Vicens’s
forthcoming El Matorral.
