Anna is a Brooklyn-based harpist, director, actor, choreographer, and composer. Anna
holds a B.M. in Harp Performance and a B.A. in Dance Choreography from the Conservatory at
Bard College as well as an MFA in Directing from The Actors Studio Drama School at PACE
University. She has played harp with classical orchestras and chamber music ensembles alike,
written and performed original music for theater and dance, and has scored several short films
and documentaries. Recent work includes playing with Ensemble Mise-En, Contemporaneous,
Beth Morrison Projects, MUR Experimental Theater Company, Mabou Mines, and New Place
Players.
Growing up in Los Angeles, CA and Nashville, TN, Anna has always been a student of multiple
artistic disciplines. Anna began studying classical piano with Gana Parfenova at age 5,
eventually delving into jazz, and latin piano with Jameison Trotter (which she would sneakily
transfer over onto harp on her own time), and began her own songwriting and composing as a
teenager. She started studying harp at age 7 with JoAnn Turovsky, at The Colburn School, and
played in youth orchestras throughout LA and Nashville. Alongside harp and piano, her “free
time” was spent taking dance classes, singing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, studying
music theory, and acting professionally in commercials and TV.
In high school, Anna attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Traverse City, Michigan, where she
majored in Harp under Joan Holland, and Composition under Dr. John Boyle. After highschool,
Anna became the first harpist accepted to the dual-degree program at the Conservatory at Bard
College, where she studied harp with Bridget Kibbey and Sara Cutler, as well as studying
composition with Joan Tower. As a member of the Bard Conservatory Orchestra Anna toured
and performed around the world - in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, Hungary, Russia,
Slovakia, Austria, and the Czech Republic. While at Bard her dual major was in Dance
Choreography, and her interest in cross-disciplinary and collaborative work really blossomed.
Since then, she has only delved deeper into that love of combining art forms and avenues of
performances. Rounding out her education with an MFA in Directing from The Actors Studio
Drama School at PACE University in New York City, she specializes in creating work that
incorporates music, theater, dance, comedy, and performance art. Having spent her upbringing
learning and mastering “the rules,” she’s now exploring the artistic freedom and innovation that
comes with breaking them.
As a teacher, Anna is committed to this philosophy of learning the rules so that you can
eventually break them! A strong foundation in technique, theory, and artistic understanding is
essential - the more tools you add to your toolbox, the more colors you add to your palette, the
more you will have at your fingertips to create your masterpiece! She also believes that a
personalized approach with private lessons is essential. Every student learns differently and has
different strengths and interests, so what works for one person may not work for the next. Her
goal, as a teacher, is to meet each student where they are coming from and to help them learn in a
way that makes them feel engaged, productive, and inspired.
